Love is infectious…

“We are not sure of it now, but it seems that Sujata is HIV positive…”

Sandeep and Sujata got married in a traditional Tamilian ceremony in Chennai. After a week’s holiday in Western Europe where Sujata dragged Sandeep to visit all the tourist places, one after the other, when all he wanted to do was to spend some time alone with her, not be among people, and reflect upon their lives, but “after all its Europe, you ought to see all the places of interest, its not everyday that you are going to be here, in paradise on earth“, and another couple of days rest at their condo in Mid-town Manhattan, they finally started packing all their stuff. They had decided to move to India after all. In Sujata’s language, Sandeep had successfully executed his devious plan and took advantage of the fact that she loves him so much. But that was just her way of not accepting a fact that she had grown tired of running in circles, alone.

They moved to Chennai to live near Sujata’s parents house in Besant Nagar. A three bedroom house with a spacious backyard and an elegant portico was not a bad start, albeit it was her parent’s holiday home, so the newly married couple knew they had not more than 2-3 years to get a house of their own, probably a flat to start with. Property prices were at their highest at that point, so that knew that had sometime on their hands.

Sandeep was grateful to Sujata for considering relocation, he knew it would be a very big thing for her and the fact that she moved without making a big fuss about it, showed that she loves and respects him very much. For someone who had spent so much time in USA, and when the Desi-Fever was just starting to creep up the Yo! Generation’s mind, it was a pleasant surprise to see her adjusting back to Indian ways with a smile on her face.

“What did the doctor say?” asked Sujata. Something was not right, Sandeep had gone with the doctor to the lab for her blood report, and came back 15 minutes later with a grim face.

“Nothing, that poor guy you hit got blood from someone else, as the cross matching of your blood samples came out incompatible, the doctor said about something called serological cross match, which didn’t come out right.” He said so confidently that Sujata believed him instantly. Sandeep continued, “

May be the poor guy’s blood cells hated the idea of being hit by yours, again!”

“Oh, thank god, at least he got he help from someone else, I’m relieved”, said Sujata. Now, Sandeep had to do just one more thing, make sure that she doesn’t gets the bad news until it is confirmed, and possibly re-confirmed by another pathology lab. Even the thought of one of them contracting the deadly virus is stupid.

Oh no, what about Rohit and Anisha, I should probably get them checked as well…and myself, did I contract it from her, or did she got ir from me….lets get the checkup done for everybody…… or may be not, not until the test results are confirmed. Thoughts were racing through his mind, and he wanted to pacify himself. He requested the doctor not to discuss the results until they have been confirmed by a “Senior Specialist”, the doctor would have raised an eye-brow when Sandeep used those words, but he was experienced enough to know that when people are struck with this thought, they start disbelieving anybody and everybody. The doctor simply passed on the file to a senior resident, and asked Sandeep to call him for a second round of tests on Sujata’s blood samples. Second blood test,

“Honey, the doctors need another sample of your blood, so the nurse would come in few minutes”. Sandeep said hesitantly, expecting a question, probably a “why?” from her. But she just nodded and went back to watching the television.

It was 7′0 Clock in the evening, Rohit and Anisha were picked up at the school by Sujata’s father, and he took them to his place for the night, and Sandeep was with Sujata in her room. The phone rang, and after a brief conversation with, what seemed liked the path lab assistant, Sandeep left to get the test results.

There was not doctor this time, he took the file in his hand, and without opening it, went straight to the Senior Specialist’s office, and entered his room without knocking. Of course the doctor knew what the problem was, and hence didn’t mind it. But when he looked at the file, all he could say was “I’m sorry.”
